PRAIRIE VIEW, TX – An exciting and informative seminar to help individuals and families reduce their debt significantly without changing the total amount being paid monthly to creditors will be held April 29th , at 12:00 noon in the Carden-Waller Cooperative Extension building on the Prairie View A&M University campus. The Cooperative Extension Program is hosting “Power Pay”, the first in a series of monthly educational seminars to better acquaint the university’s faculty, staff and students about the program’s outreach services that are provided to citizens in the state of Texas.
“We know that it’s very challenging, especially in the current economic situation, to have enough money to pay bills, especially credit card balances,” said Jacquelyn White, program specialist, Family and Consumer Sciences.
“If you charge $1,000 on your credit card and pay the two percent minimum monthly payment, it could take more than 30 years to pay back that $1,000, and you will have paid almost $5,000 in interest. We’re going to show our Prairie View campus participants how to pay off their credit card balances in a minimal amount of time, which could save them thousands of dollars.”
A computer software program called “Power Pay” will be used for this first seminar, where participants will go through the steps of learning how to repay one initial credit card debt completely and, subsequently, applying that now available money to another debt. “This is one of the educational programs that we use for our Extension Family and Consumer Sciences county clientele to assist them in getting out of debt,” said White.

“Attendees for the seminar are asked to bring a list of their credit card bills, which should include the balance, current monthly payment and interest rates for each credit card or current revolving debt,” White said.
